Story of A Man Who Ruled Half of The World And How He Died
To be a king is one thing; but to lead your warriors into the battlefield and emerge victorious is another thing altogether.
Alexander III of Macedon, also known as Alexander the Great, was a member of the Argead dynasty and a king (basileus) of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. He was born in Pella in 356 BC and, at the age of 20, succeeded his father Philip II to the throne.
He spent the majority of his reign on an epic military campaign across Western Asia and Northeastern Africa, and by the age of thirty, he had formed one of the ancient world's largest empires, extending from Greece to northwest India.
He never lost a fight and is generally regarded as one of the most influential military leaders in history. He conquered the Achaemenid Empire (Persian Empire) in 334 BC and launched a ten-year campaign against it.
Following his conquest of Anatolia, Alexander fought a series of decisive battles against Persia, including the battles of Issus and Gaugamela. Following that, he deposed Persian King Darius III and invaded the entire Achaemenid Empire.
His empire spanned the Adriatic Sea to the Beas River at the time.
Alexander invaded India in 326 BC in order to conquer the "ends of the earth and the Great Outer Sea," and won a major victory over the Pauravas at the Battle of the Hydaspes.
He finally gave in to the demands of his homesick soldiers, dying in Babylon in 323 BC, the city he wanted to create as his capital, without carrying out a series of planned campaigns that would have started with an invasion of Arabia.
A series of civil wars broke his kingdom apart in the years after his death, culminating in the creation of many states governed by the Diadochi, Alexander's surviving generals and heirs.
How Alexander The Great Died At the age of 32, Alexander died in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar II in Babylon on the 10th or 11th of June 323 BC [142-143].
There are two versions of Alexander's death, each with minor differences in the details of the death.
According to Plutarch, Alexander entertained admiral Nearchus 14 days before his death and spent the night and next day drinking with Medius of Larissa.
He developed a fever, which deteriorated to the point that he couldn't talk. Concerned for his welfare, the common soldiers were given permission to march past him as he quietly waved at them.
Alexander was hit with pain after downing a huge bowl of unmixed wine in honor of Heracles, followed by 11 days of weakness; he did not grow a fever and died after some suffering, according to Diodorus' second account. This was also stated by the historian Arrian as an option, but Plutarch flatly denied it.
